A soldering iron. I guess the simplest way to explain is that you can like, melt stuff and it joins together? So if you want to connect two ends of something, you solder it and connect it.

... you don't use it for everything, though. Just certain things.

I guess they assume we know how to use this kind of stuff. Like the washing machines.
